20-21 June 2006
Aesthetics and Politics

Around and with Jacques Rancière.

The French philosopher Jacques Rancière is the author of a number of essays and books on topics ranging from politics and the legacy of Marxism to cinema and literature, including La Haine de la démocratie (2005, Hatred of Democracy, 2007), La Mésentente (1995, Disagreement. Politics and Philosophy, 1998) and La Fable cinématographique (2005, Film Fables, 2006). He is also a contributor to Les Cahiers du cinéma.
Rancière’s interest in visual culture and the relation between politics and aesthetics, two fields he perceives as inherently belonging to one another rather than being autonomous, is the subject of two recent books: Le Partage du sensible, Esthétique et politique (2000 The Politics of Aesthetics, 2004), and Malaise dans l’esthétique (2004) that have elicited wide-ranging responses from within many disciplines. In this two-day event, Jacques Rancière will reflect upon his conception of the relation between aesthetics and politics. On Tuesday 20 June, he will give an hour-long lecture followed by questions. On Wednesday 21 June, nine critics and academics from various disciplines will present papers in which they respond to Rancière’s ideas and engage into a dialogue with these recent publications.

Organized by ASCA’s Photography, Film and Displacement research group of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (Marie-Aude Baronian and Sophie Berrebi). Made possible with the support of Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen (UvA, Afdeling Wijsbegeerte, Afdeling Mediastudies), Institut Francais des Pays-Bas Antenne La-Haye, Maison Descartes, ASCA.
